7 Tips for Peace of Mind Travel With Kids
by Anya Clowers, RN
I admit, I was the world traveler who sighed in relief when babies passed my row boarding the plane. Who wants a screaming baby nearby?

My husband and I wanted to be parents someday, however, we weren't ready to give up our lifetime passion for travel. Warned many times how kids would prevent us from traveling well, we made "the list" of pre-child, must see destinations.

In 2003, I discovered there would be three of us traveling on our upcoming trip to Singapore and Japan. The surprise pregnancy gave me motivation to research how successful family travel was done! I've since worked closely with experts (flight attendants, gate agents, pediatricians, TSA, pilots) to find tips, products, and services that really make a difference to family travelers.

My preschooler has now traveled with us to 15 countries and opened doors we weren't qualified to see before becoming parents. Having children has introduced us to locals, fabulous foods, hidden sites, and the best playgrounds from here to the Canary Islands!

Travel is a gift -share it with your children. It is the best education available.

As you prepare for travel, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Involve kids at developmentally appropriate levels. Hotels, planes, security, and even luggage can be fascinating to children. Educate about boundaries and expectations. Participating travelers are happier and better behaved!
  2. Take photos of kids wearing bright, travel day clothes. Pack in carry-on. Travelers of all ages are easily distracted and separated. Avoid personalized clothing/bags for safety reasons.
  3. Test out new medications, products, foods, etc. before travel. Avoid emergencies or tantrums at 37,000 feet.
  4. Avoid medicating for convenience. Medications can have paradoxical effects and cause hyperactivity instead of sedation.
  5. Remember to be a parent first and a traveler second. A hug, smile, and TLC go a long way. Even babies react to tension and anxiety.
  6. Assess situations before reacting. Ear pain, teething, sensory overload, gas pain, anxiety, etc. can be too much for a child to process without physically releasing tension (crying). Be kind and provide for their needs.
  7. Recognize flying does affect the human body. Gas in the body expands when flying and can cause unexpected pain. Avoid drinking carbonated beverages. A dose of simethicone may help to break up large air bubbles into smaller bubbles and provide relief.
*Consult with your physician for all medical needs.

Travel safely, self-sufficiently, and with peace of mind as the foundation of every trip!
