Flying With Special Needs: Packing

Tips to consider when packing luggage:
- Cover basic needs by packing smart. Carry-on luggage must cover all needs. Consider additional time for flight delays and cancellations. Do not rely on the airlines or airport for medical needs, food, clothing, or beverages - bring your own.
- Duct tape a large white piece of paper on the inside of your luggage with your name, cell phone and airline/flight numbers. Do not rely on the flimsy tags that are easily ripped off by baggage conveyor belts.
- Take a photo of the inside of your packed suitcase in case you need to file a claim for lost luggage.
- Place an identification tag on your wheelchair, scooter, medical equipment, etc.
- Take care of these things before you leave home.
Carry-On Luggage
- The carry-on limit does not apply to medical devices and equipment. Make sure to pack enough supplies for your flight, considering delays, reroutings, cancellations, etc.
- An extra pair of pants or underwear is worth having if needed.
- Clip a small flashlight onto the outside of your luggage or on your key ring.
- Do not rely on assistance from others. Although many times it will be available, it is not a guarantee. Travel with a 4-wheeled carry-on suitcase and hook it onto the stroller, wheelchair, etc. Consider using the Swany Walkin'Bag as this can also be used as a seat or something to lean on while walking.
Checked Luggage
- Consider using a luggage delivery service. Whether FedEx, UPS, or a private company like The Luggage Club, having someone pick up your luggage at home and deliver it to your destination can save time, and stress, and offers a great alternative to the airline's lost luggage claim forms!
- Personalize your luggage to eliminate confusion! I like the UBrand adhesives, or upload your own photo to Shutter Fly for personalized and fun luggage tags!
