In educating parents about flying with kids, one of the most important pieces of advice I give is to take the time to prepare your child for flight. When children know what to expect, they tend to behave better, and having well-behaved children on a plane will make your trip much more enjoyable.
Yay! Planes DVD is one preparation tool you can use for teaching preschool age and older children about planes, their parts, and how they fly. Although this DVD focuses on smaller planes, understanding the parts of a plane and how it works is valuable when flying the big commercial planes as well! Two sock puppets, Argyle and Jim, narrate the DVD with a bit of humor that will keep your kids interested. At the start of the video a pilot of a small plane walks us through the inspection of the major parts of the plane, even telling us what the parts do.

Later on in the video, Argyle and Jim tell us what 3 things are needed to fly (hint: 3 shapes are needed – they’ll tell you all about it!). Throughout the DVD, different types of planes can be seen taking off, landing, and even doing some aerial tricks.
My 4-year-old especially liked the part of the video that runs through the NATO phonetic alphabet. Since his nanna is a pilot, he recognized her call sign in the alphabet. The DVD comes with a chart of the alphabet for the aspiring pilot who wants to learn this aviation alphabet.
I’m always looking for ways to educate children about flying because I know this education will pay off for the entire traveling family. With Yay! Planes, the whole family will enjoy learning more about planes. Even older children who have never flown may have very real fears about flying because they are completely unfamiliar with planes. Add Yay! Planes to your flight education library, and you’ve just given your child one more piece of information about the exciting world of air travel.
