Airplane Safety Card: Traveling With Kids

Do not overlook the small (but new) things that are great entertainment for kids when traveling! After boarding the airplane, I allow my son to check things out such as the overhead light, the air vent, and the window shade before he has to be buckled in. That way he is not frustrated later when the seat buckle prevents him from exploring these new items. Of course, as with all aspects of flying with kids, be respectful of the people around you (don’t let your child kick the seat in front of him/her or allow him/her to slam down the window shade).

One thing that works every time we fly (even though he sees it at least twice a month on flights), is the emergency card in the seat pocket.

The brightly colored illustrations of how to properly do the brace position as well as what to do in the event of a water landing are great for making up little stories and finding the boat in the picture or counting how many people are in the photos.

So do not think that you must load up your bags with toys. Many times the enthusiasm and interest that I present things with is reflected in my son’s response. And a great time to look over this card with your child is after the flight attendants do the safety demonstration or when first boarding. Reading the card through with your child will also refresh your memory of what to do in an emergency. Multitasking is a great skill you have already learned as a parent!
