Airport Security (TSA): Pay to Keep Your Shoes On

by Anya Clowers, RN

Whether you are a frequent flier or not, you will be interested to know about new lines going through airport security. The U.S. Govt. approved new technology that will automatically scan shoes and boots for bombs, eliminating the hassle of removing shoes. (Although we were in Paris the same afternoon as the “Shoe Bomber” went through Charles De Gaulle Airport-so I am not bothered by removing my shoes!)

At first, this option will be available only to those who pay to be a “Registered Traveler”. This program costs $100 per year to join, and requires advance sign-up and a background check.

The benefits are having access to a faster, shorter security line and not having to remove shoes and boots.

Other technology that you may see is the new backscatter machine. This x-ray machine scans through clothing for potentially harmful objects, and would allow passengers to keep both their shoes and jackets on.

Some of these devices are being tested in different airports throughout the country. The goal is to have a faster and more convenient, yet safe and thorough way of screening passengers. Some airlines already offer special security lines for first class and frequent fliers.

In London’s Heathrow airport, we were thrilled when we were pulled aside into the “family line”. Since the security line wound around a few corners, this made a huge difference to us and to my son who was tired from an early morning
flight from Vienna.

The good news is that as time goes on, and the private sector gets more involved, more technology will be introduced and those dreaded security lines will move faster for all passengers!
