Child Safety on Airplanes: Holiday Travel Packing List 2009

by Anya Clowers, RN

Keeping our children safe is our most important responsibility as parents. Proper restraint for ALL passengers is a basic safety requirement in case of unexpected turbulence or aborted take-off and landings.

As a parent, I had to recognize and accept that if something happens to my unrestrained child in flight, the airline is protected and will not suffer (read the many warnings from the FAA, NTSB, and all airlines).

My child- my responsibility-my decision.

With budgets tight, this can be difficult to accept. The cost of an airplane ticket plus safety equipment to properly restrain the little one can add up. However, consider teaming up with family or friends to purchase this equipment designed to keep little ones safe in flight. (Most people do not travel at exact same times and can share products).  With full flights over the holidays, do not hope for an empty seat next to you…

Here are two products that have made traveling safely much easier!

  • CARES harness

The 1 lb. CARES harness was designed for use on airplanes and replaces the need to haul a bulky car seat onto the plane and through airports. This harness fits in a pocket or bag, yet secures a child safely and comfortably during all phases of flight when seated in their own seat. This has changed the way we fly! Approved by the FAA for children at least 1 year of age (between 22-44lbs. and less than 40″ tall).

  • Traveling Car Seat: Radian XT

Although I love my CARES harness, there are times when a carseat must travel with us – and so I simply fold up our Radian XT and sling it over my shoulder, hang it over the back of the stroller, or wear it like a backpack! It is a heavier sturdy seat, but it is not awkward to carry like some other car seats. This car seat is narrow enough to fit three car seats across in a back seat of a car or simply allow more room for others sitting next to the car seat. This narrow seat fits wonderfully in an airplane seat! Now with side impact protection, this solid seat provides what I need to travel safely with my son.

I have not written a full review yet for this seat, but I have found a well-written review here:
