Food & Drink: Holiday Travel Packing List 2009

by Anya Clowers, RN

Food and drink should be included in everyone traveler’s carry-on bag. Unexpected delays, unplanned illness, weather detours, and dreaded cancellations are reality for many travelers during the Holiday Travel Season (actually anytime!).

Because of liquid restrictions and airport security, purchasing at least one bottle of water per family member after security becomes a necessity. What if someone doesn’t like water or won’t drink it plain? Water is very important to keep the human body functioning properly, especially when flying! There are plenty of things in today’s retail market that can be added to water to make it taste pleasant and even increase the benefits of drinking the water!

For kids and adults I prefer to add packets of Emergen-C. Many flight attendants drink this on a regular basis to boost immune systems. These packets taste great and instead of sugar, contain some good stuff!

How about packable food? Recognize the potential for delays, cancellations, upset tummies, hungry tummies, picky eaters, teething toddlers, and irritable husbands. ALWAYS pack snacks that are worth eating. Avoid sugary nothings. Plan ahead- the supermarket is full of great tasting energy bars, snack kits, trail mixes, and simple foods like apples! Avoid stinky odorous foods and gas producing food as this will only result in miserable people all around.

Traveling with young kids also means messy situations. Using sippy cups (even for older kids), easy-to-wipe-clean bibs, wipes, no rinse cleaner, easy to use bowlsplates with rims, and spoons, as well as clothing that doesn’t show the spots all do make a difference!

Where to carry all this stuff or what to eat on in a dirty airplane? This product is a favorite of mine just because it is so clever and clean! Take a look at the Tray Bien – the tray table for travelers of all ages!

Ok so I added more products in here than I intended to – but only because one of these products may be the one to make the difference! What are your specific needs? I love that most of these products were invented by parents who were fed up with the way things were and designed a product that was exactly what made their trip (or just parenting) easier!
