Gesundheit! When You’ve Been Sneezed On…

Gesundheit! When You’ve Been Sneezed On…

We’ve all been there. Crowded flights, cold and flu season and nowhere to go as we are packed in like sardines. Random coughing all around, and then before I know it AAAACHOOOOO! I can feel the droplets land on my arm as the person next to me quickly apologizes.

What can I do? There are things I can do to prevent illness from taking over and devastating my family travel. First, I do not touch my face. This is the number one way germs enter our system – through the nose or mouth. I wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizer wipes or gel while in flight.

Plan ahead for this exposure – it is almost a given that someone near you will be sick when flying during cold and flu season.

-Keep nasal passages moistened so it is more difficult for germs to settle in and find a home.

There are an increasing number of products to help travelers stay healthy, lessen the duration of symptoms, and prevent others from getting sick utilizing resources found in nature and without side effects.

I have used products such as Airborne, Emergen-C,  Boiron Homeopathic products and even salt rinses. As soon as I am exposed to illness or feel a sore throat or any sign of colds or flu, the game is on. Rest, hydration, washing hands, and products that decrease symptoms are included in my routine. Why decrease symptoms if it doesn’t cure? If I can sleep better with less congestion, loosen up and expectorate mucous to prevent massive infections or excruciating ear pain when flying, and just breathe easier…. it WILL help me get better faster!

At the American Academy of Pediatrics conference, I spoke with French representatives from Boiron, the manufacturer of the homeopathic product Oscillococcinum. I had seen this product in the past, but didn’t know much about it. The reps were actually from Paris and stated they take it every time they fly, since once exposed to the flu it can take a few days to incubate in the body until symptoms are felt.

I was intrigued. They gave me a sample packet of the cold product as well as the Oscillococcinum. Since we were getting ready for our Europe trip, I threw them in the pile of carry on items to be packed.

Flying during cold and flu season does prove a bit more challenging due to exposure to so many people. However, I take advantage of these products that have been effectively used for over 200 years. Homeopathy does not interact with medications or have any side effects.

So, if I am sneezed on, I rinse my nasal passages with a saline rinse, drop a fizzing effervescent Airborne tablet or Emergen-C packet into my water bottle, gargle a bit of salt water, dissolve some homeopathic pellets into my mouth, and always always always – WASH my hands!

And then pass this video on to the person next to me:
