A bit off topic – but I had to share.
I love the Mayo Clinic environment. Very sick people from all over the world fly to Mayo for the best care. Mayo has made it a beautiful place to be – especially when sick. Besides being the cleanest medical facility I have ever worked at or seen, it is equipped with the latest and greatest equipment and nurses
. Mayo Clinic buildings and hospitals have bright hallways, amazing marble stairways and Italian glass sculptures (feels like a luxury hotel!).
An open airy atrium is the perfect setting for a grand piano open for all to play (patients and personnel). Music is incredibly therapeutic for patients and family members who are dealing with multiple appointments, anxiously waiting for lab results, surgeries, chemotherapy, unknown illness, and even death.
Two of my sisters work at Mayo. One is a nurse anesthetist who believes in the power of comfort, touch, and listening to patients. My other sister transfers patients between appointments and comforts them with her smiles, upbeat personality and just listening to them. They both appreciate the comforting atmosphere Mayo provides for patients and have commented on the many times the grand piano has been soothing for souls. One sister forwarded this YouTube video to me – a couple married for 62 years shares their smiles and talent with patients in the atrium at Mayo playing an upbeat and fun tune. Check out the moves this 89 year old man has!
This young girl was just given a “clear” yearly checkup visit after battling thyroid cancer. She shared her joy by singing and playing one of her favorite songs.
Thank you Mayo for providing this therapeutic outlet for all!
I can also tie this in with travel. Music can be soothing, lively, annoying, or just noise. Choose wisely what music you or your kids listen to while traveling. Anxiety can be increased with jittery music or angry lyrics. Choose relaxing or inspiring music on your iPhone, iPod, or other electronic gadget!
