NTSB Offers Safety Recommendation to FAA on Airplane Child Restraint

by Anya Clowers, RN

The NTSB had a busy week. They were reporting on the most recent crash in Alaska while reviewing the March 2009 airplane crash in Montana in which 7 children (ages 1-9) were killed. It is because of this crash and the unrestrained or improperly restrained children that were thrown farthest from the crash site, that the NTSB is once again asking the FAA to do its job regarding child safety.

The NTSB  issued a Safety Recommendation to the FAA to require ALL passengers regardless of age to be seated and restrained in a separate seat during take off, landing, and during turbulence. The FAA has stated it is safest for children to be restrained in flight but has not mandated restraint of these defenseless passengers. Instead, children under the age of 2 are allowed to sit on an adult’s lap – endangering not only themselves but every other passenger in the airplane cabin if there is unexpected turbulence or aborted take off or a crash landing.

I am hoping the FAA will do its job and mandate something as basic as restraint for all passengers.
