Maclaren USA is voluntarily recalling one million umbrella type strollers due to a dozen reports of children’s finger injuries- even amputations- from a hinge located on the side of the stroller. The official recall will happen tomorrow when more details about recalled makes and models will be available. So far it appears that all umbrella type strollers sold in the U.S. are affected. Maclaren USA is cooperating with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and will provide free hinge covers to consumers and retailers to cover the hazard.
To sign up for the free hinge covers, call (877) 688-2326 and provide your contact information as well as notify them how many strollers you need to repair. I just hung up the phone after a call with them and the customer agent was very pleasant even though she had to hand write all my contact information down since the computer system was down due to the overload! The Maclaren website link www.maclaren.us/recall for the recall was not working when I tried it (probably also overloaded). Once this is working, you will also be able to sign up for the recall online. It takes about 7-10 business days to receive the hinge covers.
If you will use your Maclaren stroller before the hinge covers arrive, please use extra caution and keep children (and their fingers) away from the stroller when opening and closing it.
As many of my readers know, I have always enjoyed using our Maclaren umbrella strollers. They have traveled the world with us and been a favorite stroller of mine for many years.

I am sad to hear about this recall, but am relieved that Maclaren USA is going forward voluntarily with this massive recall to prevent any further injuries to children. A voluntary recall (as opposed to a regular mandated recall) shows me the company does care and is going the extra step to be informative and supportive of their consumers!
Take a deep breath, call the number ((877) 688-2326) or go online (www.maclaren.us/recall) to order your hinge covers, and appreciate the effort of the Maclaren USA staff in keeping us informed and our kids safe!
More details to come…
