Sacramento Airport: The Big Build

by Anya Clowers, RN

Early this morning, this Southwest Airlines Aircraft seemed to be posing for a photo in front of it’s future home at the Sacramento Metropolitan Airport (SMF). As I was admiring the new modernized Terminal B, the plane continued to sit there. Finally I got the hint, snapped the photo, and it taxied to the runway smiling!

Southwest Airlines Aircraft Posing in Front of Future Home Terminal B

Sacramento is one of my local airports (yes, I consider the 5 in Northern CA/NV as valid options when I fly!) I remember old Terminal B – past home of Northwest Airlines. It was old, drab, and dirty. I remember flying in and being horrified by the amount of black flies and at times- mosquitoes buzzing around. After I stopped commuting monthly to work at the Mayo Clinic in MN, those Northwest Flights no longer appealed to me (NWA was the only non-stop from SMF to MSP). I was happy to switch to Southwest flights in the new Terminal A. Bright, shiny, and clean, this Terminal was fun!

(Or was it a fun place due to all the Southwest personnel who always smiled, laughed, and enjoyed their work?)

I am delighted to see the progress construction teams are making in the Terminal Modernization Plan. You can follow the progress and plans at http://www.bigbuild.org/ “The Big Build” as it is referred to is scheduled to be complete in 19 months, 11 days, 13 hours and 16 minutes….
