You took CPR right? You remember the ABCs and are proud to tell me all about them.
Until an emergency happens.
I can tell you from experience both professionally in the hospital and a few times on airplanes, in a bank, and at church – that in an emergency situation most people have difficulty remembering their own name. It is emotionally traumatic and a shock to see a loved one in pain or injured (especially when dealing with a child). This shock can affect even the most competent person to feel helpless when first aid needs to be initiated.
There are some things in life we hope we never have to use, but are so thankful we have them when needed. The SafetyMate Talking First Aid is one of those items – this device provides calm instructions during an emergency, and more importantly, could help save a life.
David Feder was a new father faced with a medical emergency 20 minutes after his daughter was born. His new infant stopped breathing. Luckily she was in the hospital and a nurse quickly came to help his daughter. This incident caused David to think about what would have happened if he had not been in the hospital. Would he have known what to do? He developed the SafetyMate to aid parents and caregivers by giving them an innovative way to refresh the information they probably learned in a First Aid/CPR class. Â

SafetyMate is an auditory system that walks you through what to do in case of the following emergencies:
- CPR, Unconscious
- Choking, Breathing
- Allergic Reaction
- Bleeding
- Burns
- Falls, Bone Injury
- Poison, Bites, Stings
- Seizures
Besides these eight main categories, there are actually 30 different first aid protocols that are covered. When one of these emergencies occurs, select the button that corresponds with the emergency. The system walks you through yes/no questions asking what symptoms are present, and then gives appropriate instructions for the situation.
Benefits of using this devise:
- Instructions are clear and concise, and given calmly – just what you need in an emergency when you may feel flustered and/or panicky.
- Buttons are easy to read, color coded, and flash when a response is required. Buttons include yes, no, pause, resume, repeat, and volume.
- Bi-lingual option. Listen to instructions in English or Spanish.
- Covers infant, child, and adult emergencies.
- Compact size – great for travel, diaper bag, Â or sharing between households.
- Provides space for extra emergency numbers. The system comes with a listing for 911 and poison control and has room for 3 more numbers.
I highly recommend that parents, siblings, and caregivers take CPR and First Aid classes. This device does not replace the valuable education these classes provide.
However, this device may be the calm prompter needed to be an “assistant” to someone who otherwise may “freeze” or feel helpless in a crisis.
Consider purchasing the optional recharging kit, which includes a wall/desk mount charging cradle, an AC adapter, four (4) NiMH rechargeable batteries, and a vehicle charging cable. Keep the SafetyMate in one location so it is easily found when needed – and feel peace of mind knowing you have a helper in an emergency.
