Sleep deprivation? This topic hits close to home. I remember those desperate moments of reading everything I could find, asking everyone I knew for tips, anything—just PLEASE tell me how to help my baby sleep!
So when Heather Corley from About.com (Baby Products Guide) pulled me aside at the ABC Kids show in Las Vegas and said, “You have to experience this. It’s amazing!†I was curious. What would really help a baby sleep—and be so powerful that when it was turned off, you literally felt a lurch in your stomach?
When I first met Jay Oliver, I could tell he was passionate about his work. He is in fact a world-class jazz pianist and composer/producer (for such artists as Sheryl Crow, Jimmy Buffett, Celine Dion, The Eagles and more). Jay has teamed with William Lenihan, Professor/Director of Jazz Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. William is an international guitarist, theorist, and composer (for artists such as George Lucas, Disney, Bernadette Peters, and many others). These dynamic and talented music scientists are the co-founders and solid foundation of Sound Science.
In the juvenile product industry, Sound Science is relatively new, but already a hit. And in the medical community, it is going to be a hero. But who will be the happiest and benefit the most from the passion and work behind Sound Science? Millions of sleep-deprived mothers and babies, along with their family members!
Jay turned the SoundSleep for Babies CD on, and we began talking about their creation. I felt myself relaxing. Standing under the bright lights and amidst the flurry of the Las Vegas Convention Center, with thousands of people talking; negotiating; and selling their products to the media, buyers, and retailers, I felt myself relax! I wasn’t getting sleepy; I was relaxing from the inside out. It was such a natural, progressive occurrence that I almost wasn’t aware of it.
The true surprise, however, came after the hour (yes, we talked for a full hour), when Jay abruptly turned the CD off. I felt it as my stomach lurched slightly. Wow! Why was that so powerful?
Jay explained it to me with an enthusiasm that is contagious. The science just makes sense.
Think about it. For almost 10 months, a baby develops inside the womb. It’s dark, warm, and loud. Yes, loud. Not quiet, like we tend to visualize.
The mother’s heart beats very near to the baby’s ears. Yet this beating of the heart is not loud in the sense we may think. The baby hears the beats through the amniotic fluid, which resonates straight to the baby in the form of soothing low-frequency sounds.
Imagine knowing only this dark, warm, and very snug environment. Imagine hearing that rhythmic beat 24/7. That beat represents the security of the womb.
Then realize how traumatic birth is, entering the brightly lit, cold, and noise-filled hospital environment. According to Jay, the high-pitch frequencies of monitors, hospital and equipment noises, conversation and crying are all high-frequency sounds that never before existed in the womb. High-frequency sounds are stimulating and agitating to the brain, and to a newborn baby (whose hearing is already acute), the new sounds are chaotic and can even be frightening as the baby tries to adjust to the shock of the new world.
Enter SoundSleep for Babies. This scientifically composed audio soundtrack is the result of actual womb recordings that are digitally enhanced to replicate the sound underwater. This patent-pending process is then combined with a perfectly rested 72-beat-per-minute heartbeat and a lush, slow motion ambient soundtrack. While listening to this recording, the baby is instantly reminded of the familiar, comforting environment of his/her former home, allowing for a far easier transition from womb to world.

I am thankful to Heather for urging me to check out SoundSleep. The effect of SoundSleep is something that cannot be fully understood or appreciated until you listen to it and actually physically feel it in the core of your abdomen—and then feel the void when it is shut off. The silk-like comfort of the music will envelop and soothe your baby.
The science of this music makes sense and the effects are powerful. Sleep is a basic need and if Baby doesn’t sleep, everybody in the family suffers in some way or other. This CD should be played for babies to help ease their transition into the world. Play it in the delivery room, in the nursery, and at home to give them comfort in their new environment. Shut the lights off, swaddle the little one, and allow nature’s lullaby to do its thing.
SoundSleep—it just makes sense.
