Staying Healthy When Traveling: Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer

by Anya Clowers, RN

Germs are everywhere and on most everything we touch. Add airplanes, airports, kids, hotels, rental cars, and cold/flu season and it’s virtually impossible to avoid coming into contact with the nasty bugs. Before we freak out, it’s important to realize these germs can do nothing when sitting on our hands or arms. It is only when they come into contact with our eyes, mouth, or nose (and gain access to our internal body) that they make us sick. So hand washing becomes key to staying healthy.

When we travel anywhere outside of our home, soap, water, and time may not be readily available. So what do we do? Most of us are familiar with instant hand sanitizers. In fact, the market is now saturated with these germ killing products.

Aren’t they all the same?

Nope – in fact, some can be detrimental due to the harsh chemicals and alcohol content in the sanitizer. It is always important to supervise children while using hand sanitizer to make sure none of the hand sanitizer is ingested (especially young ones who suck on hands while teething, eating, or exploring).

Other than the harsh chemicals being dangerous for children, the dehydrating effects of the sanitizer can result in dry, cracked hands. Dry, cracked hands are not only painful, cracks are another entryway for bacteria to enter the body!

I was able to sample the Surya Brasil Moisturizing Antibacterial Organic Hand Sanitizer.

Take a look at the ingredients that make this hand sanitizer worth packing!

Made with the following plant ingredients direct from Brasil:

Aloe: soothing and healing properties

Jua: cleansing and refreshing fruit

Acai: powerful moisturizer and antioxidant rich in protein and Vitamin E

The fresh scent is all natural. No artificial fragrances or coloring. Instead nature provides a refreshing scent from the essential oils of Lavendar, Peppermint, and Ylang Ylang. What a nice fragrance to replace the horrific odors of airplane cabins!

So does this moisturizing, organic, nice smelling lotion take care of those nasty germs? Conveniently, anytime, anywhere, 99.9% of those germs are killed while our hands are bathed in soothing, soft luxury. The sanitizer contains 62% alcohol made from fermented rice (at least 60% alcohol is best for taking care of the bugs).

On the practical side? My son didn’t yell that his hands were stinging when the lotion was applied since the soothing ingredients counteracted any of the potential stinging from the alcohol portion of the sanitizer . Kids will be kids and small scrapes or cuts sting like crazy when harsh chemicals/alcohol contact them. A happy, healthy child is always a good thing!

The Surya Brasil hand sanitizer is available in a convenient travel size (2.02 oz.) or in a larger 6.76oz. size (nice for the car).
