Top 4 Strollers That Travel Well

by Anya Clowers, RN

Do not underestimate the importance of traveling with a stroller. The type of stroller needed depends on the type of travel planned and the age and number of children traveling. We chose to evaluate what stroller we reach for the most when traveling – whether across town or across the world. Four strollers are our favorite…

To be honest, we were unable to narrow our stroller selection down to less than four types because we like these stroller brands for various types of travel and various age children. We have chosen the following 4 strollers: Maclaren, Baby Trends Snap N’ Go, Joovy Caboose Ultralight, and Baby Jogger City Mini.

Maclaren

-We love the quality and functionality of the Maclaren brand of strollers and have been traveling with them for over 6 years. The  Maclaren Quest is a lightweight, super slim, and ultra reliable stroller for kids up to 55lbs.

In 2009, we selected the Maclaren Techno XLR as our stroller of choice for a big international trip. These two strollers have proven to be fantastic investments for our traveling family! Maclaren did issue a voluntary recall on all umbrella strollers due to injury potential for little fingers (pinched in the hinge) when the stroller is folded closed. However, with the free hinge cover provided to all Maclaren stroller owners (call 1-877- 688-2326 to request the free hinge covers), the  hinge is easily covered and the stroller is safe to use.

Baby Trend Snap N’ Go: Just as the name says, this stroller offers practical ease when traveling with an infant car seat.

A roomy basket on the bottom with cup holders on the handle for convenience, the Snap N’ Go describes efficient travel. There really is not much to say on this one – spend your money on a quality FAA approved car seat and use the Snap N’ Go to transport your baby, car seat, and belongings through the airport and at your destination!

Joovy Caboose Ultralight

-The Joovy Caboose Ultralight is a super lightweight stand-on Tandem stroller perfect when traveling with multiple kids. The Ultralight Caboose offers an option to stand or sit for the older child in back while the front offers a seat (with harness restraint) for the second child or an option to secure an infant car seat.

My 5 year old son actually chooses to take this stroller on some occasions when he is the only one in the stroller. The Joovy Caboose Ultralight has actually been a great source of entertainment as he pretends the stroller is a train (and stands holding on as he “toots the horn”), pretends to be a garbageman using the bottom basket for storing garbage, standing then sitting then standing again or opening and closing the large canopy and pretending he is in a fort- he is kept busy! When his younger cousin rides along, they both are happy and my sister and I enjoy our trip.

City Mini

The Baby Jogger City Mini accompanied us on our most recent trip to Asia. My son was at the top of the weight limit (50lb.) and the stroller still proved fantastic for international travel! We enjoyed the near flat seat recline when he slept with jet lag as we toured around.

The swivel front wheel allowed easy maneuverability through the crowds of Hong Kong and was able to be locked for uneven terrain use in Thailand. The sun canopy offers fantastic coverage and sun protection and yet I could peek in when needed to check on my son.  My son enjoyed a comfortable ride with the City Mini’s front wheel suspension that really does make a difference.

But the best part of this stroller was the ability to fold it with one quick motion! Many times at restaurants, airport security, trains, etc. we were able to quickly fold this stroller with one hand and ease.

The stroller is narrow and fits well in urban areas – yes, suitably named the City Mini!

Traveling with a stroller is essential. It is a safe haven for kids to relax, nap, eat, play, and observe the world from the protection of familiarity. It also protects them from the elements, carries belongings, and is like traveling with an assistant!

Remember to protect your investment. Stroller theft is not something you want to deal with when traveling. We use the BuggyGuard to protect our strollers and the B-Hook to securely hang our bags on the stroller.
