An Itinerary for Everyone: Traveling With Kids

by Anya Clowers, RN

Vacation means something different to everyone. You may be surprised to find out how vastly different the images of a “great trip” are to people, even in your immediate family!

Keep this in mind when putting together your vacation itinerary. A “great trip” for one person may be enjoying some quiet time reading a book in a serene setting. To another, it may be a full day of exploring new sites, and to a third it may be just having time with the family – talking, sharing, bonding.

When traveling with young children, listening to everyone’s opinions about the itinerary is very important. Visiting museums and statues may be fascinating, once in a lifetime opportunities – but to a young child it could be pure torture.

I have actually come to thoroughly enjoy the differences in my own family’s ideas of vacation. And I have really enjoyed taking photos of them simply enjoying their moments of “now this is my idea of a vacation!”

Take the time to TALK to your family – LISTENING what their vision is of the upcoming trip. And then be open to including time for everyone in the itinerary. I have found that the best part of travel isn’t necessarily visiting the sites. But instead it is absorbing the environment – LIVING in a totally new surrounding – and then observing what aspects appeal to different members of my family.

Take time to ENJOY vacation as well as the uniqueness of each individual.
