Traveling with Kids: Helping Myself First

Ever really think about why in an emergency you should help yourself to oxygen or a flotation device BEFORE you help your helpless child?  I think, as parents, we have the natural instinct to help our children first.

However, when you look at it, it does make sense that I need to be taken care of before I can care for others.

If the oxygen mask drops and I am trying to apply the mask to my child, I can quickly become hypoxic (low on oxygen) and pass out.  However, if I apply my mask first, I am now not at risk for passing out or becoming disoriented and I can then help my child.

The same is true for flotation devices.  If I am secure, I can reach out to help my child apply his vest.

Of course, chances are that I will never have to worry about these things.  This is just something to understand the reasoning behind, tuck the knowledge into my subconscious and then move on.

Since I am a visual learner, I will include the photos from the safety card in case it helps someone else as well.
