Traveling With Toddlers- Surprise!

When traveling with toddlers, it is helpful to have new toys, books, or a favorite snack reserved for those moments when distraction is needed.

For instance, when we board the plane, I will encourage my son to look out the window observing what is going on with the luggage and the ramps, while I get his CARES harness or the car seat set up.

I then wait until the cabin door is closed and I tell him it is “surprise time”! That is his cue to quickly get into the seat and buckle up before the flight attendant walks past our row. Surprise #1 comes out of the CARES harness bag (yes, I use the blue sack to carry the harness and the first surprise or two).

The surprise is usually something small like a snack so that he will be thirsty when we are taking off (swallowing on take off and landing can help prevent ear pain) or a small toy to keep him occupied for any tarmac time.

Surprises can be small and inexpensive. They can be as simple as grapes in a ziploc, Teddy Grahams, or a sticker book. (A good sticker book is valuable and can be used at your destination in many situations! Here my son is busy in a London restaurant with his favorite stickers!)

I also like the Treasure Bag, a small backpack filled with gift wrapped “surprise” toys especially for the flight! As you can see the orange backpack can also carry little toddler toys through the Underground Tube!

Most importantly, take time to be excited with them and build anticipation for these little surprises.

However, be careful not to overdue the surprise option as it will wear off and not be as effective. Make flying a fun and new adventure for kids. Interact with them and you will be surprised yourself at how traveling with toddlers can be a great experience!
