TSA Rules & Airport Security With Kids

TSA rules and airport security affect all who travel – regardless of age. When traveling with kids, airport security can be extra tough. Being prepared will make a big difference.

1. When packing, be aware of the location of any items which will need to be declared when going through security. Pack them in an easily accessible area. (Check ALL bags – even your child’s bag and remove any TSA prohibited items). Once at the airport, take a few moments to organize before stepping into the security line.

2. Label each ziplock bag with your name and keep your valuables near you.

3. Locate your declarable and questionable items: know where the empty sippy cups are and point them out to the screener to save the hassle of being questioned about them. If bringing juice, formula, or baby food, be prepared to prove that you are traveling with a child. (Don’t go through the line separate from your child). **NEW** TSA rules regarding breast milk state that mothers flying without their child may bring breast milk through security IF they declare it prior to screening. If you are carrying prescription medicine or liquid medicine, make sure that it is properly labeled and also declared to the screener.

4. Carry your ID with your boarding pass in an easy to reach location or (better yet) in an EZ Show Retractable ID Holder.

5. Take shoes off your children and yourself before reaching the front of the line and put them on the bottom of the tray – keeping in mind that the trays are not sanitary as everyone’s shoes end up there.
(Avoid putting a bottle or sippy cup on the bottom of the tray)

6. Remain calm and allow extra time for long lines. Pay attention to your children while waiting in line. Explain to them the process before arriving at the airport and also prep them while waiting in line. Point out to them how others remove their shoes and place their belongings on the conveyor belt. This can be a traumatic experience for children, and requires extra attention from the accompanying adult. Watching a video about airport security regarding children has proven to be extremely beneficial to these young travelers. I recommend the DVD toolkit Shae By Air for children as young as toddlers. This excellent tool walks children through the entire flight process, including airport security.

Do not be offended by TSA rules and questions, be prepared and know your rights! Print out any relevant information from TSA’s website to cover yourself if questioned

*One more thought about why little kids may be additionally screened. If TSA would naively think that terrorists would not use elderly people in wheelchairs or little children to accomplish their evil, than we would all be in trouble. TSA rules and airport security are in place for our protection, elderly and little children included!
