I have said many times that compliance is directly related to understanding the “why”. This is accomplished through education. I learned this as a hospital nurse 13 years ago. When I tried to educate my patients about post-surgical home care, they stared back with an “I’m overwhelmed with everything and not really wanting to learn anything” look. Then when I explained WHY it was going to be important to clean their new tracheostomy tube out, (or it would clog up and prevent them from breathing), THEN they were interested and motivated to learn.
I have used this same approach with everything about air travel – and now TSA is teaming up with the Ad Council to educate passengers about the WHYs behind airport security rules. Just in time for Holiday travel, this education will benefit thousands of families as they better understand the reasoning behind the rules.
