Wear Your ID When You Travel: Road ID

by Anya Clowers, RN

Whether you’re traveling with kids or without, having identification is essential! Be a smart traveler and wear your identification. In case of emergencies, especially medical emergencies, seconds can be the difference between life and death. Road ID was invented after a warning from a father and a near accident. In 1999, Edward Wimmer was training for his first marathon. Edward’s concerned father suggested that he carry his ID with him on his many training runs. His father wanted a way to be notified in case of an accident or emergency. Edward took his father’s suggestion seriously after he found himself run off the road and into a ditch after a close call with a pickup truck.

After this instance, Edward realized that had he been hit by the truck he would have been identified merely as a “john doe.” His family would not be notified and his medical records would not be available to the hospital. How much precious time would be lost due to the lack of identification? Edward and his father, Mike Wimmer, decided to make a difference for outdoor enthusiasts, and possibly save lives by inventing the Road ID.
